Online dating needs online safety
This Valentine’s Day, OneID® is taking online safety to the next level. We’re bringing together voices from across the dating industry to help people navigate online connections safely. Our campaign, Catch the Red Flags, is all about simple, practical tips that help daters stay safe from scams, impersonation, and image misuse.
Romance scams, revenge porn, underage grooming, and online sexual exploitation are on the rise. With AI tools making it easier than ever for bad actors to manipulate others, dating apps and social platforms have become breeding grounds for fraud.
When people are in a dating mindset—whether on an app or a social media platform—they are often emotionally vulnerable, which can make them more open to deception. Scammers exploit this to draw victims into schemes that result in financial and emotional harm. Worse, many victims hesitate to speak out, feeling ashamed or blaming themselves.
Londoners have been hit hardest by dating scams, with the estimated cost of romance fraud topping £400 million. According to Action Fraud, over 8,000 cases of romance scams were reported in the UK in 2023 alone, with victims losing an average of £10,000 each. The NSPCC has also warned about the increasing risks for young people, as underage users on dating platforms are more susceptible to online grooming and exploitation.
Spot the red flags before it’s too late.
Once something enters the digital space, it becomes harder to control. Whether it’s your images, financial details, or interactions on a dating app, prevention is the best defence. Recognising red flags early on can save people from emotional distress and financial loss.
That’s why this Valentine’s Day, we’re helping people make safer, smarter connections online. By being informed, looking for verification badges, and choosing platforms that prioritise security, daters can protect themselves from potential harm.
Expertise. Experience. Empowerment.
We’re teaming up with leaders from different spectrums of the dating industry to root this campaign in reality.
Kate Taylor, leading Online Dating Expert, offering actionable tips to navigate the online dating world safely.
Phil Beasley, Co-founder, Sizzl, a dating app that puts safety first by requiring user verification.
Madelaine Thomas, Founder, Image Angel, a privacy protection solution helping people take control of their images online.
Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing insights and advice from these experts to empower daters with the knowledge they need to stay secure.
Dating apps have a responsibility to protect their users and must invest in robust safety features.
Sizzl, in partnership with OneID®, has already taken steps to keep underage users and scammers off its platform. By integrating highly effective age assurance and other verification measures, they’re creating a safer space where users can trust the profiles they engage with.
For platforms that treat online safety as just a compliance requirement, age verification may seem like a box-ticking exercise. But when dating services embrace safety as a core value proposition, they create a differentiated experience that attracts and retains users. Sizzl is proving that security can be a competitive advantage, not just an obligation.
By prioritising online safety, dating platforms can build trust, protect users, and create spaces where genuine connections can thrive.

The co-founder of uniquely safe dating app SIZZL will share his experiences of creating a safer digital dating experience and share his expert insights into compliance with a range of other businesses in the space at the upcoming Online Dating and Discovery Association (ODDA) workshop.
Taking place on Tuesday, 28 January 2025, "Compliance for Dating Companies with the Online Safety Act in 2025" is a 90-minute seminar. It will provide essential guidance for dating platforms to help them navigate the UK’s new Online Safety Act (OSA) regulations and keep users safe amid a mounting barrage of cat fishing and romance scams.
With the Online Safety Act introducing stricter requirements for platforms to safeguard users and reduce illegal activity, the workshop is an opportunity for industry leaders to learn how they can ensure compliance, avoid penalties, and maintain trust in their platforms. Phil Beesley will join a panel of experts to share SIZZL’s innovative strategies for exceeding safety expectations, offering a clear roadmap for others in the industry to follow.
“SIZZL has always been committed to creating the safest dating experience possible,” said Phil Beesley, Co-Founder of SIZZL. “We’re proud to lead the way with proactive solutions like our partnership with OneID® , which ensures that every user is verified, real, and accountable. It’s an honour to speak at this workshop and share insights on how compliance with the Online Safety Act can not only protect users but also strengthen trust in the entire dating industry.”
The Online Safety Act (OSA), which came into effect in 2023, places new legal obligations on online platforms, requiring them to reduce the risks of illegal activity and harmful content while implementing robust systems to protect users. For dating apps, this means cracking down on fake profiles, catfishing, and other risks that threaten user safety and privacy.
By integrating OneID’s government-certified open banking verification process, SIZZL ensures that every user is over 18, a real person, and exactly who they claim to be. The mandatory verification process takes just 12 seconds, eliminating fake accounts, bots, and romance scams.
The need for strong user protections has never been greater. The dating industry faces rising concerns about fake profiles, with estimates suggesting that 10% of accounts on major platforms are bots or scammers. According to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau, almost £92 million was lost nationwide to romance fraud in the 2022/2023 financial year alone.
The ODDA workshop will provide an essential forum for industry leaders to learn actionable compliance strategies and discuss the long-term implications of the Online Safety Act. With Phil Beesley representing SIZZL, attendees can expect valuable insights from a brand that has consistently prioritised safety and innovation.

Sizzl: The only dating that complies with the Online Safety Act
Innovative dating up SIZZL is thrilled to announce its relationship– pardon, partnership with OneID, the leading government-certified identity verification provider. The integration sets a new standard in online dating security, making SIZZL the safest dating platform on the market.
This is only the latest in a series of bold steps to counter the rising risks associated with online dating.
Fake profiles and romance scams are rampant, made even easier by the use of AI to create hundreds of fake profiles for a variety of ends – none of them good. SIZZL and OneID have joined forces to eliminate these threats. Thanks to advanced open banking technology, OneID verifies that each user is a real person, over the age of 18, and precisely who they claim to be – nipping any fake and AI-generated accounts in the bud.
This collaboration puts SIZZL ahead of the UK’s Online Safety Act (OSA), with a level of accountability and authenticity unmatched by any other app in the dating space. While many dating platforms turn a blind eye to the issues of catfishing, fake profiles, and unsolicited messages, SIZZL is addressing these concerns head-on.
Statistics from the past few years highlight the urgency of SIZZL’s safety-first approach. Online dating scams have soared to an all-time high, with 1 in 10 profiles on popular platforms like Tinder and Bumble believed to be fake. This widespread problem, which leaves millions vulnerable to emotional and financial harm, has largely been ignored by existing dating apps.
“With our partnership with OneID, we’re raising the bar for what users should expect when it comes to safety in dating apps,” said Gillian Myhill, Co-Founder of SIZZL. “Online dating can be fraught with risks, and we are determined to provide a space where people can feel safe, protected, and secure.
We believe our users deserve peace of mind, and that starts with accountability.”
You may think this makes the onboarding process long and complicated – and you’d be wrong! Made to prioritise both security and simplicity, the process takes under 30 seconds.
OneID’s open banking technology, already trusted by major brands like Shopify, NatWest, and Adobe, makes it easy for users to verify their identity in seconds, ensuring a smooth yet secure experience.
